Literacy North Halton– A History
In 1986 a group of citizens in Halton Hills recognized the need for a service to In 1987, Literacy North Halton began to provide one-on-one tutoring for English speaking adults. Volunteers from the community were trained and matched with students, working in a non-academic, sympathetic environment to help students overcome the barriers of low literacy skills. Since 1988, over 1500 students have received training. LNH has made a
difference Literacy North Halton has evolved to meet the needs of its adult learners. It has used innovative teaching methods, including small group and computer-based learning. By creating community partnerships with The Centre for Skills Development, Gary Allan High School, local libraries and churches, Literacy North Halton has provided lessons for people in supportive locations throughout Georgetown, Acton and Milton. With help from various grants LNH has promoted the movement for plain language by producing a training workshops and a booklet, “Plain Speaking – A Guide to Clear Communications”. The booklet has been distributed worldwide and both the booklet and workshops have been praised as excellent tools by those who prepare printed materials. With the financial support of goverment agencies, granting bodies, fundraising events, community organizations and individuals, LNH is able to ensure that North Halton enjoys the benefits of its grassroots community organization, focused on improving adult and family literacy.
